![]() ![]() ![]() Whether discussing the supposed value of writer's workshops, explaining the role of the novelist's agent and editor, or railing against the seductive fruits of literary elitism, On Becoming a Novelist is an indispensable, life-affirming handbook for anyone authentically called to the profession. "For a certain kind of person," Gardner writes, "nothing is more joyful or satisfying than the life of a novelist." But no other vocation, he is quick to add, is so fraught with professional and spiritual difficulties. With elegance, humor, and sophistication, Gardner describes the life of a working novelist warns what needs to be guarded against, both from within the writer and from without and predicts what the writer can reasonably expect and what, in general, he or she cannot. On Becoming a Novelist contains the wisdom accumulated during John Gardner's distinguished twenty-year career as a fiction writer and creative writing teacher. ![]()

Hannah was a woman learning how to run her own life, and Michael was a strong-minded officer. ![]() ![]() Review 1: I give this book three out five stars for being an entertaining read with appealing protagonists. What I liked about the book:1) The main characters were well defined and endearing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The main perspectives are Elise and Thorton as they embark on new ventures in Illinois, but we also see some scenes from Elise's family she had to leave behind in New York. ![]() Of course, my expectations of the quality of writing were met- I learned so much history, was immersed in the setting, and the characters came to life with emotion and feeling as they navigate complex relationship dynamics and uncertain and desperate circumstances. The author instead focuses on an orphaned family being torn apart as unemployed women are sent on trains to help establish new towns where there are jobs waiting to be filled. The plot of this book is not quite what I expected- when I hear "orphan train" I picture the children from the city getting placed in families out West. ![]() ![]() ![]() Among many things, Harry in the book voiced his heartbreak over how the royal houses pinned him and William against each other and in an interview after the memoir's release, he said their mother, the late Princess Diana, would be sad to see where their relationship stands today. Whether or not these changes work might depend on how accurate you like your page-to-screen adaptations. ![]() With the second season out, the writers behind Shadow and Bone have continued to make daring decisions, leaning on the books as a launching pad instead of a foundation. ![]() Right away, showrunner Eric Heisserer made some bold choices - pulling in characters who don’t canonically get introduced till after the main series? Making Alina half-Shu? Adjusting the core romantic relationships? But if the first season’s reception was any indication, those choices were the right ones - fans ate it up.
